Welcome to the inaugural issue of this newsletter!  I am excited to be able to bring you information that you will enjoy receiving and find valuable, as this newsletter is a result of many of your inquiries to me.  Many of my topics will be addressing the common questions that I get as a practitioner, as well as fun tips, facts, and empowering stories of people who have been able to impact their health using nutritional and energy therapies.  I hope that you will find this newsletter to be helpful and educational - and something that may actually make grocery shopping a bit more fun!

Cancer prevention with food Nutritional science is continually uncovering the power phytonutrients, which are found in plants - which have been shown to provide specific health benefits.  It is these phytonutrients that give food its color, taste, and smell, but more importantly, may help prevent disease in humans.
The foods to emphasize in your diet for their cancer-preventitive phytonutrients are:
  • Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage)
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Berries (raspberries, strawberries)
  • Cantaloupe, honeydew
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes
  • Seaweed/sea vegetables
When eating these foods for cancer prevention, it is important to buy organic because food chemicals, added during growth, manufacture, or preparation, and pesticides used in non-organic farming, are considered a contributing factor to the development of cancer.
Question mark Ask Erika "I've been using Splenda because I wanted to stay away from Nutrasweet or aspartame.  I've heard it is a form of sugar, so it sounds safer.  Do you think it is safe to use?"
There is a lot of debate about artificial sweeteners - just google it and you'll find information on both sides of that answer.  Personally, I do not use artificial sweeteners as they have been linked to numerous health issues - and if there is significant question about something, I simply choose to stay away.  I find people who have shied away from artificial sweeteners are still using Splenda because they have heard the marketing slogan "made from real sugar."  What they don't know is that it's made from sugar mixed with chlorine - it was discovered by accident in a lab and now it's everywhere as a sweetener.  Does that sound like something you'd want to eat?
A good question I always have my clients ask themselves is "Could this food have been eaten 100 years ago as it stands before me now?"  If the answer is no, then that is something I recommend staying away from.
There are a lot of natural sweeteners that can get you the sweet taste without the added chemicals - such as stevia, honey, and molasses to name a few.  Not only do they get you the sweet taste you want, but they contain minerals and vitamins as well that your body can recognize and utlize.
As with anything, moderation is key.  Small changes you make, especially with things you do every day, can have a dramatic impact on your health in the long run.

Cauliflower
This vegetable flower is not only tasty on a party vegetable platter, but it's good for you, too.  It is among the cancer-preventitive cruciferous vegtables - and is approximately 25% protein.  It's rich in potassium, folic acid, and vitamin C.
Tip:  When you bring one home from the store, peel the leaves off and cut it into smaller sections and throw them into ziploc bags and keep them in the refrigerator - that way, you can just grab a handful when you want a crunchy snack, or toss some on top of your salad for some added taste and texture.
Empowering you I want to thank my friends, family, colleagues, and clients for your support and the opportunity to share what can be very powerful information.  It is my sincerest hope and prayer that my efforts to educate and share information about how everyone can make a difference in their own health and that of their family will be impactful.  Natural healing through nutrition and energy work has changed my life and I am excited to share options and information with others in the hopes that they, too, may experience what I have.   Information is one thing - it in the application of that information where the magic lies.
In abundant health,
Erika
